The first trimester of pregnancy begins two weeks prior to conception and lasts until week 12. Though your baby grows most rapidly during this time, you may struggle to connect with your amazing little bundle of joy.
You may experience exhaustion and morning sickness that remind you of the pregnancy. But, you will not yet feel any flutters or any other signs of a growing baby.
Going for a 6 weeks 1-day ultrasound can help you feel more connected by showing you all the wonders happening inside of your womb. Read on to learn what you may see during this scan!
1. Fetal Pole
At this stage of development, we refer to your baby as an embryo. This pearl-sized little wonder’s major organs will develop during this point in life.
During your six-week ultrasound, you may finally see the fetal pole, which introduces you to this little gem. It will look like a little, living blob developing alongside its yolk sac.
2. Gestational Sac
The gestational sac develops when only a group of proliferating cells is too small to see makeup on your baby. At your six-week ultrasound, you will see this incredible structure.
This fluid-filled sac will surround your little one with amniotic fluid and eventually becomes the amniotic sac. During this time, it contains a yolk sac that provides nourishment to your embryo as the placenta forms.
3. Heartbeat
Because you cannot feel your tiny developing baby yet, many mothers worry about the viability of their pregnancy. During this ultrasound, you may discover your child’s heartbeat, which indicates life.
The heart develops between five and six weeks of pregnancy and will beat continuously throughout its entire life. It allows your little one life and fills everybody with love.
Seeing it can feel like the most exciting moment of your life. Amazing how such a tiny structure carries so much significance.
4. Seeing Double?
At this point of early pregnancy, some new parents get an extra exciting surprise. Seeing double yolk sacs and potentially other structures can indicate twins!
This early you cannot yet tell if the twins are identical or fraternal. But, it will help you prepare for twice the love!
What if Something Is Missing?
While we can estimate basic human development, some free spirits do not exactly follow suit. If you do not see one of these structures during your ultrasound, do not panic. Simply talk with your doctor and set up more imaging the following week.
This early, even one day can make a huge difference. You may even be off on the date of your last period by a couple of days, which would alter your day of conception.
